How Memory Works

ROM-ROM has five distinct types.These are:ROM,PROM,EPROM,EEPROM(Flash memory).While these are all distinct they all share two characteristics.1.They are all nonvolatile.In other words, they are not lost when the power is turned off.2.The content in the chips are either nonchangeable or are only changeable when a certain operation is performed.ROM chips are connected to diodes using columns.Some columns are "1" and others are "0".The 'ones' are the columns connected to the diodes,while the 'zeros' are'nt connected to anything.Using it's columns, the ROM pushes charges into the selected row.


RAM-RAM is made of many transistors and capacitors.Capacitors store electrons until another is put in and it 'flushes' the other one out.When ever the enrgy is cut off, the stored memory is destroyed.If the memory is filled up, then memory would be deleted.There are many different kinds of RAM:SRAM,DRAM,FPM DRAM,EDO DRAM,SDRAM,DDR SDRAM,RDRAM,Credit Card Memory,PCMCIA Memory Card,CMOS Ram, & VRAM.


Virtual Memory-Virtual Memory helpsyour computer to run many different kinds of applications at once.If it is used too much at once, your computer can get slower.


Caching-Caching is based on your computer's memory.It basicaly makes your computer faster while keeping it cheap,to.It stores information that you have previously opened or saved and is able to pull it up faster than it could have if it had'nt stored it.
